ELEVENTH ROUND

JEFFRIES FIGHTING WILDLY

JOHNSON SCORES THE POINTS

Battered and bashed, but still game and solid, Jeffries dashed desperately into the eleventh round. He landed hard on the nigger, and fought wildly, hoping by main force to beat down the terrible man who had maimed and half-blinded him. Johnson kept cool and calm, and every now and again punctuated Jeffries' wild rushes with a tolling punch. Again in this round the points went to the negro.

A TIGERISH FINISH TO A ONE-SIDED FIGHT.

JEFFRIES BATTERED UNMERCIFULLY.

Experts at the ringside passed the verdict at the beginning of the thirteenth round that Jeffries would simply have to stay and not fight if he hoped for a chance to stay the limit. Tho fight was a 'one-sider.' From the start the negro blocked the old champion's blows at every stage of the game, and during the last five roundg punished him severely. Johnson went into the 15th round savagely, and in quick succession delivered two knock-downs, Jeffries each time falling against or into the ropes. As Jeffries staggered for a foothold after the third time he had been sent to the floor, Johnson sprang at him like a tiger, and with a succession of lefts on the jaw sent him down and out.

PATHETIC LAMENT.

OF THE FALLEN GIANT.

"I COULDN'T COME BACK."

ASKS FOR JOHNSON'S GLOVES.

As Jeff was helped to his corner he said:--

"I am not a good fighter any longer. I could not come back, boys; I could not come back. Ask Johnson if he will give me his gloves."

When Jeffries hung over the ropes in the last tragic moments hundreds of friends rushed close, crying:--

"Don't let the old man get knocked out."

But the timekeeper was inexorable, and the count went on. irrexorable, and the count went on.

When the' count reached 'seven' it was evident Jeffries was finished, and a hundred people rushed through the ropes, and Timekeeper Harting stepped from the ring.

Jeffries was picked up by his brother and Corbett and hurried into his corner in a thoroughly dazed condition.
