explanatory notes

‘The Singapore line’ was a nickname for the ships, represented in Western Australia by Dalgety & Company, which shipped produce north via Singapore, rather than west via Durban and/or Cape Town. The ships so represented belonged to two companies: the West Australian Steam Navigation Company and the Ocean Steamship Company, also known as the Blue Funnel Line.

Vessels Singapore-bound from Derby or Wyndham would, of necessity, navigate several narrow straits as they worked north-eastward along the Indonesian archipelago, from Sourabaya to Batavia (Jakarta) and on to Singapore.
