PORT HEDLAND.

A large number of luggers have been here lately, and many are being laid up. There is plenty of shell 30 miles from Hedland, but it does not pay, owing to it being impossible to sell. Reports from inland show that rain is badly needed everywhere. Stock will have a bad time if none falls within the next month or two.

The water supply at Hedland is still causing anxiety. Mr. Male, in a speech, expressed the opinion that the Government should nationalise a scheme. There would be a great demand for water here by the boats, travelling stock, and by the residents in the future, and a good revenue would accrue. Although it might be insufficient to pay expenses, it would encourage people to live here.
