12["Alfred Dreyfus, the Martyred Soldier, Sends his Thanks for Hebrew Sympathy", , c. 1899]

ALFRED DREYFUS,

THE MARTYRED SOLDIER,

SENDS HIS THANKS

FOR HEBREW SYMPATHY.

In October last Mr Abraham Davis, the president of the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, despatched the following letter to Captain Alfred Dreyfus:--

CAPTAIN ALFRED DREYFUS

Dear Sir,--I desire, on behalf of the members of the East Melbourne congregation, to extend to you the assurance of our deepest sympathy with you in the unexampled distress which you have undergone, and of our sincere admiration of the fortitude which you have displayed throughout the agonizing experience of the past five years. I would couple with these expressions toward you the further assurance that the members of this congregation, in common with the vast majority of the people in Australia, have been thrilled with admiration at the heroism and devotion of your wife, to whose fearless championship, no doubt, the granting of a re-trial is due. The courage with which you have sustained the physical sufferings inflicted upon you, the fortitude with which you have borne the more grievous horrors of undeserved humiliations, the persistent patriotism which, through all, and now, animates you, are all typical of the Hebrew blood which is in your veins, and throughout the long-drawn tragedy in which you have been the actor, and the sufferer, have received the homage of all the nations of the world. In this I join most respectfully, and pray, as my congregation prays, that the Almighty will grant you the dearest wish of your heart, the acknowledgment by France of your innocence and the remaining days of your life may be so filled with happiness and honor as to obliterate all but the memory of the martyrdom you have undergone.

Believe me, dear Captain Dreyfus,

Yours most faithfully,

ABRAHAM DAVIS

President.

SAMUEL A. MARKS

Secretary.

By the last mail Mr Davis received the following acknowledgment. It is date from Carpentras, in the department of Vaucluse, in the south-east of France, 19th November, and reads as follows:--

Mr and Mme. Alfred Dreyfus, avec tousleurs remerciments pour le tempignage de sympathie de la congregation Hebraique de Melbourne."

The translation is:-- Mr and Mme. Dreyfus, with all thanks for the expression of sympathy of the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation."
