At the present juncture there might be some reason in the claim of Broome pearlers for leniency in regard to men indentured for work solely afloat, and their claim for a chance to re-engage without sending time-expired men home first, will no doubt be fairly treated by the Minister; but not one reasonable man will be found to dispute the statement that abuses have been rampant in the past. Take, for instance, the bare-faced manner in which indentured men were allowed to engage in work ashore, as waiters, carpenters, etc., to the exclusion of whitemen.
