The fourth day of the trial of Alice Mitchell was entered upon at the Criminal Court to-day.

Harriet Lenehan, a lady inspector, stated that in the course of her duties she visited the accused’s residence frequently. She had visited the woman’s house since she first occupied it, sometimes twice a week, sometimes once, but she had always found the house perfectly clean. She went into the rooms occupied by the children, looked under the beds, opened the drawers, and inspected the feeding bottles, and never found any cause for complaint. The children and their clothing were always clean.

It appears that Harriet Lenihan was a government health inspector before becoming the foundation matron of the island lock hospitals.
