A MAGNIFICENT PEARL

But No Market

BROOME, Saturday.

A white shell-opener employed by Mr. A. G. Russell brought in on Sunday absolutely the finest gem ever seen on this coast. It is perfectly round, which is the most valuable shape, and is of beautiful lustre. The weight when cleaned was just 100 grains. The pearl was got in shallow water off Red Hill. It was in a blister, which, when taken off the shell, weighed 208 grains. An offer of £1000 for a half share was made before the blister was touched. The gem is worth on a good home market several thousands of pounds, but there will be no sale for pearls or shell till the war is over. All pearlers here say that no precious gem has been seen to equal this for a round stone.
