Famous Australian Pearls
Pearling in Australia has not jet yielded many spectacular finds, but what notable discoveries have been made occurred in the Western Australian field. The 'Southern Cross' is the most notable of famous Australian pearls. It was found off Baldwin, in 1883. It is formed of nine separate pearls, grouped in the form of a cross 1 1/2 inches long. Seven pearls form the shaft, two, not well balanced, making the arms. The individual pearls are not of great size or beauty, and the gem's value depends on its unusual design. The finest pearl yet found in Austialian waters is a drop-shaped gem the size of a sparrow's egg, and weighing 100 grams. It was found on the W.A. const in 1917. It was named 'Tho Star Of The West' and valued at £14,000. The average pearls found in the North West fishery are known throughout the world for their beauty, size, shape, colour, and lustre, and buyers come from every civilised country to purchase them.
